The latest figures from the Vehicle Inspectorate show that 31.7 per cent of the 22,775,000 cars, vans and passenger vehicles with up to 12 seats tested in 2000 failed their MOT. The Retail Motor Industry Federation RMI, which represents MOT testing stations and service and repair garages says motorists are disregarding their own safety by ignoring regular vehicle service intervals and simply relying on the results of the MOT to tell them their car is unsafe.

I have heard a friend recommending a preMOT test, surely this is just paying for the same items to be checked twice?
Many motorists now take their car to a garage for a preMOT test, this should take the worry out of the test itself as potential failures can be spotted, and often, rectified quite simply. Charges vary from area to area but if you offer the garage any remedial work the costs could be minimal. When you take into account your time and inconvenience taken to represent your car to the test centre for a retest in the event of failure, the preMOT test is definitely worthwhile. If the car passes both, just be thankful, and pat yourself on the back, for keeping your car in top condition Dont think of it as money wasted on paying for the same items to be checked twiceMany motorists now take their car to a garage for a preMOT test, this should take the worry out of the test itself as potential failures can be spotted, and often, rectified quite simply. My parking brake lever travels 4 or 5 notches before it is fully engaged, a friend told me it must not be more than 3 notches or it will fail, is this true?
No The examiner will check the effectiveness of the operation by listening for definite and regular clicks as the pawl moves over the ratchet teeth. The parking brake has to prevent at least two wheels from turning and must be free from fouling adjacent parts.
My cars suspension is working well enough but there is a noise which, I suspect, is a rear wheel bearing. Does the MOT test cover such noises
Yes The examiner will spin each wheel in turn on a raised hoist and listen particularly for any sound indicating roughness in the bearing Excessive roughness or tightness in a rear wheel bearing will fail the car.
