 Set up an MOT vehicle testing station Introduction This guide will tell you what you need to do to set up an MOT vehicle testing station (VTS). It will look at the requirements that you as the owner will need to meet, including obtaining Authorised Examiner (AE) status. It will also look at your responsibilities as an AE, the equipment you will need, premises requirements, and the authorisation requirements for testing different classes of vehicle. Apply for authorisation as a vehicle testing station with the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency Before you can open a vehicle testing station (VTS), you, your premises and the equipment you use will need to meet a number of requirements. Each applicant must have Authorised Examiner (AE) status. You will also need to satisfy the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) that your premises meet the other necessary requirements in terms of facilities and equipment. These requirements differ depending on the types or classes of vehicles that you wish to test. Once you are satisfied that you can meet the necessary standards and requirements, you should complete form VT01 and send it to VOSA with any supporting documents needed. Deciding which classes of vehicle to test When deciding which classes of vehicle to test, there are several things to consider. Firstly, different classes of vehicle require different test equipment. This means that you will need to make sure you have at least the minimum level of acceptable equipment for each vehicle class you plan to test. You will also need to make sure that you have a Nominated Tester (NT) who is approved to test the different vehicle types. Meeting the required standards for vehicle testing stations Once your application is approved and you are authorised to operate a vehicle testing station (VTS), you will need to ensure that you continue to meet the standards set out by the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA). Once you are operational, VOSA will carry out regular risk assessments of your VTS. This will involve checking that the VTS is well maintained and that it offers clean and comfortable facilities, such as suitable customer waiting areas.
